Companionship Care: Frequently Asked Questions

What does a companion caregiver do?

A companion caregiver spends scheduled time with your loved one to keep them engaged, safe, and connected. Companion visits can include conversation, shared meals, games and hobbies, supervised walks, accompaniment to appointments and social events, errands and grocery shopping, transportation, light help around the house, and gentle reminders about medications. Companions also notice and report changes in mood, memory, or mobility.

Can a companion drive my parent to appointments?

Yes. Caregivers can provide transportation and accompaniment to medical appointments, errands, shopping and other activities across Fairfield County. Depending on the circumstances, the caregiver may drive the client’s vehicle or their own vehicle. When a caregiver’s vehicle is used for client transportation, the applicable mileage charge is included on the client’s invoice.

Is companionship care available just a few hours a week?

Yes. Companionship is often the first service a family starts with, and hours can be scheduled flexibly around what your loved one needs, from just a few hours a week upward. Many families increase hours over time as needs change, and the same caregiver can add personal care or homemaking to the visit.

How does companionship help with loneliness and isolation in older adults?

Regular social contact supports mood, appetite, sleep, and memory, and it gives family members a trusted second set of eyes on how a parent is doing. Our companions build routines around the activities your loved one already enjoys, and they encourage safe activity and time outside the home.
