Personal Care: Frequently Asked Questions

What does personal care include?

Personal care is non-medical help with the private daily tasks a person can no longer manage comfortably alone. Our caregivers assist with bathing and showering, toileting and incontinence care, dressing, grooming such as hair care and shaving, oral hygiene, and moving safely around the home. Caregivers also watch for and report changes in health, such as skin changes, appetite changes, or new confusion, to family and to our nursing team.

How do caregivers protect my parent’s dignity during bathing and toileting?

Caregivers are trained to explain each step before it happens, to let your parent do as much as they can on their own, to keep the person covered and warm, and to follow the routines and preferences your parent already has. We prioritize caregiver consistency whenever possible and consider the client’s needs, personality, schedule and preferences when making caregiver assignments. As care needs or schedules change, we work closely with the family to maintain continuity and a good caregiver match.

Can personal care be combined with companionship or homemaking?

Yes. Most service plans combine personal care with companionship, homemaking, medication reminders, and safety supervision in the same visit. You choose the hours, and the caregiver covers whatever your parent needs during that time.

Is personal care covered by Medicare?

Not on its own. Medicare covers a home health aide for personal care only when a patient also has a skilled nursing or therapy need and is homebound. Personal care as a standalone service is private pay or reimbursed by long-term care insurance, and we submit those claims for you.
