Senior Services in Greenwich

Senior Services
in Greenwich featured

Greenwich is more than just a picturesque waterfront Connecticut town – it’s also a community that strives to provide meaningful support for its older residents. From social centers and home care, to medical partnerships and memory assistance, Greenwich offers a range of valuable services to help seniors age with dignity, connection, and purpose.

The Commission on Aging

At the heart of Greenwich’s senior support is the Commission on Aging, a municipal entity established in 1975 to serve as the town’s planning and advocacy body for older adults. Under its by-laws, the Commission was established to “assess and identify the evolving needs of older adults in Greenwich; develop strategic plans and establish priorities to enhance and expand programs and services that address those needs, while increasing public awareness and engagement around aging-related issues and available resources.”

The Wallace Center

One of the Commission’s key partners is the Wallace Center (previously known as the Greenwich Senior Center), located at 299 Greenwich Avenue. The center hosts a vibrant schedule of classes, activities, and social events – from chair yoga and tai chi to art and language workshops. In early 2024, the center was formally renamed to honor Mary Louise Wallace, a longtime local resident and philanthropist, whose donation is fueling further enhancements and programming. At the Wallace Center, members can form and maintain friendships, enjoy an affordable nutritious meal, and engage in activities that promote overall health and well-being. Membership is free and transportation is available. A wide variety of offerings for Boomers and beyond are offered daily.

Home-Based & In-Home Support

Understandably, many seniors prefer to remain in their homes for as long as possible – and Greenwich supports that goal. Through trusted homecare services, the town offers evaluated, plan-based personal assistance for residents who face challenges with everyday tasks. Helpful Tips for Seniors and Their Families

Define your needs

Consider what services are most important, whether it’s daily assistance, companionship, health-related support, or transportation.

Start with the official resources

Contact the Commission on Aging or the Wallace Center first, as they are the central hubs for local senior services and can provide referrals.

Explore in-home care options

Research different home care agencies to find one that fits your budget, needs, and comfort level. Look for agencies that are registered with the state and have good client satisfaction ratings.

Prioritize safety and stability

Look for in-home care providers that focus on maintaining routines, enhancing home safety, and preventing falls – some agencies even offer a home safety assessment.

Investigate specialized services

Depending on your needs, you may find specialized services for things like Medicare counseling or tax assistance, available through town resources or organizations like AARP.

Utilize regional and national resources

Use tools like the Elder Care Locator to find services in your area, or contact the Southwestern CT Agency on Aging (SWCAA) for support with regional resources and care management.
